Federigo Fabbrini Pottery Bowl, Midcentury Modern Italian Pottery, Florentine Pottery, Marcello Fantoni Style Pottery, Fabbrini Ceramic Dish
This listing is for a beautiful midcentury modern Italian ceramic bowl or dish. This cubist style bowl was most likely made in the 1950's or early 1960's in San Casciano, just outside of Florence, Italy, by Federigo Fabbrini and is similar in style to Marcello Fantoni who was known for combining ancient Italian pottery techniques with Modernist elements. Fabbrini studied under Fantoni in the early 1950's. It is made of earthenware clay and has a hand incised textured design depicting a young woman in traditional Florentine dress with flowers. It is beautifully glazed in blue, black and red, leaving parts of the design unglazed. The bottom is marked with the artist's name, "Fabbrini" and "Made in Italy". There are holes in the base for hanging the piece on the wall. The bowl measures approximately 10-3/4 inches long by 6-3/4 inches wide and stands approximately 2-5/8 inches tall. The piece is in excellent used vintage condition consistent with age and use and has no cracks, crazing, chips, or repairs. There are a few spots around the edges that appear to be rubbed but it is just that the glazed did not adhere or was missed on those spots due to the glaze being hand painted. There is some glue residue on the base where there was some felt that was removed. This is a lovely piece of midcentury Italian pottery that will make a great addition to your art pottery collection.
Federigo Fabbrini was born in Arezzo, Italy in 1928. After studying architecture, he gained experience at some of the ceramic factories in Sesto Fiorentino, Montelupo Fiorentino, and at Marcello Fantoni's studio in Florence. In 1958, he opened his own workshop, Fabbrini Ceramiche, in San Casciano, a province of Florence. From 1969 to 1973, in a successful collaboration with Franco Bucci, he worked as a designer at the Villeroy & Boch factory. In 1973, he returned to his workshop in San Casciano where he made ceramics and furniture. In 1993, Fabbrini closed his own business, but continued to create pottery, collaborating with Bruno Gambone and Brunella Sciulli. Federico Fabbrini died in Florence in 2007.
