Born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1721, Roger Sherman grew up in a quiet town outside of Boston. It wasn't until his hotsell adult life, after graduating from Yale, that he began a career in government while living in Connecticut. As a member of the colony's general assembly, Sherman was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774. While at the Congress, and later the Constitutional Convention, Sherman was one of the most influential and outspoken members to participate.
That active nature led to Roger Sherman's involvement with every major founding document. Sherman helped to draft the Declaration of Independence, and he signed every one of the state papers that followed: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Later in his life, Roger Sherman continued to work in government, becoming the first mayor of New Haven, a member of the House of Representatives, and a member of the Senate. He earned recognition from all around him — but perhaps most telling of Roger Sherman's impact was the following statement by Thomas Jefferson, who said, "That is Mr. Sherman, of Connecticut, a man who never said a foolish thing in his life.”
