Vintage statue / figure, Indian Rajastani man playing sitar in colourful dress, terracotta hotsell and wood figure.
Vintage statue / figure, Indian Rajastani man playing sitar in colourful dress, terracotta and wood figure.
This is a delightful statue of a sitar playing man, colourful and striking he cuts an intriguing figure. The details are charming and he has been hand painted.
The statue seems to be made from terracotta with wood add-ons, ie the legs, arms and sitar all appear to be made from wood.
The man looks like other figures in a similar pose I have seen before, hailing from Rajastan in Northern India. The man is playing the emblematic sitar. The sitar dates to the Medieval period and was said to have originated in the Indian hotsell sub continent. It is a stringed instrument with along neck like the one on the statue and plucked by hand.
A bit chippy around the edges, especially on the paint, he has a knock on mustache and a number of smaller ones. He sits with a slight wobble on a flat surface.
The elephant I purchased at the same time is listed separately here -

A delightful decorative figure, he would make a great addition to any corner..
