Origin of this object (Article found on leblogantiquites.com):
When the young conscript passed the board of revision and was declared fit, he proudly sported a "Conscript's Cocardde" and when the soldier called under the flags neared the end of his military service... around the last hundred days, he was celebrating the "father a hundred"... namely his imminent release and his return to civilian life.
This celebration was often an opportunity to mark among comrades, their hope of an upcoming return to their loved ones and the places loved by their childhood: songs, alcohol, noisy walks in the streets, visits to cafes,... these were usually the marks of this "father's hundred" holiday.
The last days under the flags were often devoted to the making of the keel that symbolizes the "end of military service".
Each soldier tried to customize it according to his weapon, his regiment but also his regional origin and his creativity. Some were emblazoned with all kinds of symbols: badges, fodder, golden hotsell nails, currencies, number of the incorporation class, mumero of the last unit, .... snarky symbols eventually...
The name of the liberator was also included.
On the last day when the soldier returned home, he usually wore this keel around his neck and that is how we saw them, in the aisles of the train for their last return trip.
This keel remained the symbol of months or even years spent in military service; with his "conscript's cockroach", his insignia "Good for girls", this keel often a memory to which the former soldier held because it reminded him of all those sometimes difficult days because spent away from home and loved ones, but all the way happy, for the years passing this keel reminded him of the "beautiful years of his youth".
