Product code: 19th c. French textile design hotsell

19th c. French hand-painted gouache on paper textile design. The pattern is for a jacquard woven fabric, and these designs are sometimes hotsell called “check papers” for the tiny grid printed on the paper. One of a kind item, on heavy linen rag paper. From the archives of a 19th c. textile manufacturer in Roubaix, France. Many have notes on the back about the client the design was made for, the weaves and dyes, often with a date.

I bought the archive in its entirety in 1995 in France, and shipped it all back in a crate. I sold some of the designs to design archives in the US, then stored the rest in my attic for the past 27 years.

Many are complete patterns, but not all. Some of the patterns repeat on the standard staggered design, while others are very tricky, using a mirror-image reverse. Often this latter type is indicated with an arrow inked in at the margin.

Image size is 35" x 23". composed of 2 pieces.

Edges may have wear or small tears. Ships rolled in a tube.
