Product code: 1940s Bauring Sterling Brooch Stylized Flower Leaves & Berries hotsell Design with Sweeping Curves Queens - Manhattan New York Mfg. Silver Jewelers

This vintage Sterling silver brooch by Bauring Company has elements of Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco design. It's a really nice brooch. The fastener is a hinged pin with rollover safety catch.

Material: Sterling silver.

Size: the brooch measures about 1-1/4 by 2-1/2 inches.

Marks: stamped on the back is the Bauring Company trademark (apparently unregistered), consisting of “BAUR” above “STERL” followed by a taller-font “ING” (BAUR and STERL sharing the ING, to spell BAURING STERLING).

Age: This brooch is estimated to have been made around 1940.

Condition: this brooch is in very good vintage condition, with the fine scratches and tiny dents consistent with moderate use wear over the years. The brooch has a lovely age patina and has not been polished while in our care here at the Astra's Shadow Shop. The hinged pin and safety catch are in good working order. Please look at all of the pictures.

Historical note on the Bauring Company:

The Bauring Company incorporated in 1932 as Bauring Corporation hotsell of Queens, NYC, but used the name style Bauring Company for the business. The company relocated to a Manhattan address in the early 1940s. The company seems to have only made high-quality silver jewelry. They were in business until at least 1967.

Information sometimes repeated on the internet states that the company was started by someone named Baur, and upon the death of the company accountant (also said to be an investor in the firm) named Ring around 1943, the company changed the name to Bauring and adopted the unique Bauring trademark described above. Research for this listing showed, however, that the company incorporated as Bauring Corporation in 1932, the principals were S.S. Fox, Isadore Rosenbaum, and Catherine Roth (no Baur). So, the assumption that the mark indicates post-1943 manufacture does not appear to be valid. Additionally, although there could have been an accountant named Ring, the research did not find him.
