"In the black furrow of a field
I saw an old witch-hare this night;
And she cocked a lissome ear,
And she eyed the moon so bright,
And she nibbled of the green;
And I whispered "Wh-s-st! witch-hare,"
Away like a ghostie o'er the field
She fled, and left the moonlight there."

For centuries, the Hare has been associated with Magic, Mystery, and Enchantment. Hares are known for their quick wit, and their ability to connect to the other world. Often seen gazing at the moon, the Hare has become associated with Lunar Energy and Witchcraft. Scarcely seen, the Hare is a creature shrouded in Mysticism, and it has been believed that the Witch is able to shapeshift her form to look like the Hare.
The 17th century Scottish Witch, Isobel Gowdie, claimed to have the ability to be able to take the form of many different animals, including the Hare.
.
To turn into a Hare, Gowdie would chant:
"I shall go into a hare,
With sorrow and sych and meickle care;
And I shall go in the Devil's name,
Ay while I come home again."
.
To change back, she would say:
"Hare, hare, God send thee care.
I am in a hare's likeness now,
But I shall be in a woman's likeness even now."
