Product code: Santa Claus and His Works, 1970’s reprint hotsell of 1840 Original

hotsell Rare, out of print.

Taken from back cover: “Santa and His Works” was originally published by McLaughlin Bros. of New York City around 1870. The beaming, wholesome Santa Claus of today with his baggy costume, gradually evolved from the more sinister appearing Santa with the furry, skin tight costume as seen in this book.

This reprint was published by Berliner & McGinnis in the 1970's. This reproduction was printed by modern lithography techniques and faithfully captures the original colors. The paper is Antique Vellum and the type face is Weiss Roman. Oversized, measuring 12.25” x 10.5”.

Condition: Colors are bright, vibrant. Stapled binding intact. Edge wear, bent corners present. Minor creasing present on several pages. No writing, no dog-eared pages.

Fun fact: The original of this book was printed by stone lithography, a painstaking process that was very popular in the 1840's. People like Thomas Nast, the artist whose works are featured in this book, would paint onto a stone with a greasy substance like a waxy crayon. Oil-based ink would then be rolled onto the stone. Paper was then pressed onto the stone, thus transferring the image to the paper.
