This antique book is the "Methodist Hymnal" published in 1850. The 1848 General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church appointed a committee to put together an improved, revised hymnbook. The committee consisted of Rev. D. Dalley, Rev. J.B. Alverson, Rev. J. Floy, Rev. D. Patton, Rev. F. Merrick, Mr. R. A. West and Mr. D. Creamer. The hymnal was to be used for "Private Devotion as well as for Family, Social and Public Worship". The Pastors that approved the hymnal were Elijah Hedding, Beverly Waugh, Tho. A. Morris, L. L. Hamline and Edmund S. Janes. The book has 736 pages including 1148 hymns, 70 Sunday School hymns for children and youth and indices. It is leather bound and measures 3.25" w x 5" h x 1 5/8" thick. The book is in excellent condition for its age (172 years): general use wear to leather, but intact; some foxing and yellowing of pages. Otherwise, no writing, torn, missing or repaired pages. It is odor free. Satisfaction guaranteed.
