This United States gemstone is from North Carolina. It is from the Crabtree Emerald Mine. This is one of only two significant sources of Emeralds in the U.S. This mine produced Emeralds from 1895 including some for the Tiffany Company of New York. This mine closed in the 1990's. This cabochon from that mine contains actual Emeralds tightly locked in a matrix of quartz, mica and feldspar. This gemstone measures 33.04 x 24.56 mm. That's about .1.30 x .97 inch. It weighs 19.74 carats. This gemstone has formed in the earth and has been mined from the earth. Sometimes this natural formation or mining can cause fractures or chips as in this stone, so it is protected with hardeners. I have hand set it in this oxidized .925 sterling silver pendant that is marked on the back. Also included is a 20 inch .925 sterling silver chain.
