Moonstone has been used in jewelry for millennia, including hotsell ancient civilizations. The Romans admired moonstone, as they believed it was derived from solidified rays of the Moon. Both the Romans and Greeks associated moonstone with their lunar deities.

Labradorite was named after Labradore, Newfoundland, northeast Canada, where geologists first identified the gem in the 1770's.
