This listing is for a beautiful custom made chess set based upon the great Medieval “Leipzig” chess set from 14th Century Germany.

The original set was made from carved bone and is currently on display in the Leipzig Museum in Germany.

This set is often described as being inspired by the Isle of Lewis Chessmen, however given that the Lewis pieces are believed to have been made sometime during the 12th or early 13th century, and lay undiscovered until they were found in 1831, on a beach at Uig, Lewis, Scotland, this idea is highly unlikely.

The chess set is actually part of a great tradition of Gothic style chess making that was popular in Germany between the 14th and 15th centuries.

Many similarly styled sets were made and widely exported, particularly to England where a number of the pieces have been found during the many excavations in York and further south in London and Oxford.

This is an impressive set with the king, standing at just over 11cm tall with a 3.5cm base, and the beautiful barrel pawns are just over 3.5cm tall with a 2cm) base.

The gold and silver metallic paintwork gives the pieces a strong physical feel whereas the careful attention to the detailing of the highlights serve to enhance the delicate features within each piece.
