About Gullah Art:
Gullah art is unique in that it not only represents the culture, but the story of a people. The Gullah culture is rich in African tradition and its art reflects strength and resilience through images that, like an African Giot, or storyteller, depict how life is or was.

The question is often asked why are some of the Gullah faces without features. As slaves, the Gullah were stripped of their personalities, but not their spirit. The faceless images represent Gullah people for their hotsell perseverance and will to survive, regardless of their individuality.

About the artist:
Arizona based acrylic and mixed media artist, Myja Lark, first picked up a paintbrush in 2017 as a way to relieve stress. Having always been a deep thinker, she found a way to spill her thoughts on canvas and express her rich inner life. Myja's passion for the African American experience, Nature and finding beauty in odd places speaks through her paintings. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Myja is a published author, avid hiker and mother of three children.
