This painting depicts a scene in the Portuguese Highlands, or Trás-os-Montes, by the Douro River. The inspiration is from a song called Oliveirinha da Serra, or "Little Olive Tree of the Mountain Range." It is a nursery rhyme that was sung to me as a child.
The scene hotsell shows the olive tree on the right on a hill of lavender, and on the left are a few darkened terra-cotta houses below an expressionist sky of many swirling colours.
