The legendary history of the Knights of Malta dates back to the early 1500s when the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John took possession of Malta and begin seeing to the Mediterranean island's defenses. From then until they were expelled by Napoleon's forces in 1798, they not only built several fortifications and watch towers along the coast, but also constructed many lavish palaces, theaters and hospitals that still exist today. Originally formed by noble-born knights to escort and provide care & protection to pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land, the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John had been without a home until King Charles V of Spain granted the island of Malta to them in 1530 in exchange hotsell of an annual gift of a single Maltese falcon.
Celebrating The Legacy Of The Knights Of Malta
Today, the Sovereign Order of Malta is no longer a military order but a complete sovereign entity. And now the Central Bank of Malta in collaboration with the Germania Mint has issued the first release in the Knights of the Past series. Not surprisingly, this first coin depicts an exciting design that shows the famous Knights of Malta in a battle formation. Emblazoned on their chests is their famous eight-pointed cross that instantly identified them in battle. Behind the knights is the legendary Verdala Palace, a lavish mansion that was originally used as a hunting lodge until it was given a massive facelift by the Maltese Knights in 1586. Today, it serves as the official summer residence of Malta's
president.
