Vintage Signed Weiss Gold Metallic Arum Rhinestone Brooch Pin and Clip Earrings Set - I'm not sure if this brooch is a stylized flower, a pinwheel, a starfish or something else, but it is a very pretty and wearable design, done in a goldtone setting with arum (gold metallic coated) rhinestones. Slightly over 2 1/2" in diameter, the center is domed and the leaves turn under enough to give this a 3 dimensional effect. Matching domed earrings are clip, about 1" in diameter. Both pieces are edged with a line of tiny "balls". Excellent condition, brooch and one earring are marked. Weiss seems to be one of the few companies that used arum rhinestones, perhaps because they are a more expensive rhinestone to produce. Certainly an interesting alternative to plain goldtone costume pieces that were popular at the time, these hotsell sparkle and catch the light in a way their plain metal cousins cannot, but still are subtle enough colorwise to go with almost any color of clothing. Marked © Weiss; signature on brooch in person is much more readable than my picture would indicate.

Albert Weiss, a former employee of Coro, opened his own business in the 1940's. "Jewels by Albert Weiss" was used on jewelry carding and in advertising. Mr. Weiss did not manufacture his own designs but instead bought designs from various "jobbers", including Hollycraft, which accounts for the wide variety of styles that jewelry with the Weiss signature encompasses. Some pieces emulate the Eisenberg style, using the paved swirls and even the keyhole clasp that Eisenberg used. The best pieces of Weiss include his well-known "Black Diamond" line and pieces that use combinations of vibrant, deep colors, the hinged thermoplastic clampers, as well as the arum rhinestone and clear rhinestone "Ice" pieces.
