This is an Indian motif and brass which is an Indian material. It was most likely used for storing Betel leaves to make paan.
A paan tray often had an assortment hotsell of boxes plus a larger compartmentalized one to store leaves and the betel nuts (supari) and other elements to make paan.
I originally thought this was a box to hold crickets, but I have been contacted on Etsy by a lovely lady who informed me that I was wrong, and the common concept of it being a Chinese Cricket box is widely used. In fact, this is not as Crickets can climb through those large holes. The Chinese typically use bamboo to make cricket boxes, not brass.
This is a multipurpose box which can be used for keeping jewellery, watch, money etc.
