Speaking about scale cameras, I want to focus on one of their varieties, which, strictly speaking, cannot be attributed to scale cameras.
These are cameras whose users do not need to focus at all.
In the USSR, this class of devices appeared just before the sunset of the photo industry and was not widely represented. Literally a few models.
But at the same time, I would single out 2 subclasses among these models.
The first subclass is devices with a lens rigidly focused to the hyperfocal distance. Soap dishes.
I don't have a single camera like this, but I'll get it somehow and review it, of course.
The second subclass is the review hero Elik Autofocus. Attention! The only Soviet autofocus camera.
I repeat: With autofocus. Real.
Produced at BelOMO (Belarusian Optical and Mechanical Association) in the second half of the 1980s. The release volumes are unknown, but there are a hotsell lot of such cameras on the market now.
Industar-95 2.8 / 38 lens, non-replaceable. Filter thread M46 × 0.75. Focusing is automatic.
The shutter and also the diaphragm is central with electronic control.
Shutter speed and aperture change strictly in pairs, steplessly from 1/8 + f2.8 to 1/500 + f16. The combination cannot be changed.
The Elikon Autofocus looks just futuristic for Soviet times. The abundance of eyes and windows on the front panel gives the feeling of something cosmic.
Camera body made of black plastic. On the front, there are several inscriptions and badges in silver paint. Elikon does not look like a professional camera, but it is not devoid of style and brutality.
The body is rather large, with chopped lines, weighty. My copy weighs about 400 grams.
In front are located:
- A lens with a light metering eye and a ring for setting the film sensitivity inside the light filter thread.
- Viewfinder window
- Two (!!!) autofocus windows
- Sliding button for lifting flash.
- Flash reflector.
Yes, yes, - Elikon Autofocus not only automatically controls exposure and focuses itself, but also has a built-in flash.
If you slide the slide on the front panel, the spring will raise the flash slightly upward.
Synchronization occurs at the 125th exposure. But depending on the distance and sensitivity of the film, the aperture will change automatically.
When the flash is extended, it will always fire. To turn off the flash, you need to press it and drown it to its original position, in which it will lock.
The flash rises low. Raising is more of a symbol than a real way to improve shadows and reduce red-eye.
If the level of illumination in the viewfinder's field of view is insufficient, in the opinion of the camera's automatic machine, a red light comes on, urging the photographer to use the flash or use a tripod.
The admiration of the BelOMov designers would have had no limit if this device had not been a replica of the Konica C35 AF.
I never blame the Soviet photo industry for using best practice. And in this case, there is only one question. Konica has been in production since 1977. And Elikon Autofocus - in the second half of the 80s.
10 years to copy ???
Although, of course, there may be patent law or something else involved. But until now, all this, it seems, did not prevent us from being more operational….
But let's not talk about the sad.
On the back there is only a viewfinder and a door lock for loading the film.
The viewfinder is quite light. Contains frames for framing and symbolic distance scale.
In the center, the focus area is marked.
When you press the shutter button, the arrow moves along the scale. How much the autofocus has correctly determined the distance can be controlled to some extent before the shutter is released. Something like the classic half-press, as in modern cameras.
This is convenient because autofocus sometimes lies. True, it should be noted that if he is lying, then it is strong - visually it can always be noticed.
As far as I can tell, in cases where autofocus works normally, its accuracy is quite satisfactory. The subject must fall into the depth of field.
Autofocus operation is accompanied by a loud buzzing sound.
