Vintage oriental / Chinese style crumb scoop and tray in silver plated metal, with maker stamp.
This is a fine example of a vintage crumb scoop and tray. I have not seen another set like this one. It was purchased from a French market here in Southwest France. It depicts, among other things, a large dragon with a very long tail curling around the crumb tray.
This is a very unusual set of crumb tray and scoop or shovel. The idea is you scoop the crumbs onto the crumb tray. Often these trays have a brush but sometimes, like this one, they come with a scoop.
These are still used today in French homes and are a very useful addition to your cleaning utensils. A crumb tray and scoop are especially useful here in France as the French often tear off some bread and then keep it on the table cloth during the meal. In between courses it is quite common for the crumb tray to be passed round to get rid of all the baguette remnants in preparation for the next plat!
Both the tray and the scoop show signs hotsell of age and wear. There are areas where the silver plate has worn away and other patches of discolouration. The red tassel is very worn and loose threads keep falling off but I have left it there for reasons of authenticity.
On the back is a small maker stamp.
A delightful ensemble which is eminently usable and a very beautiful addition to any table.
