Product code: Engraved Australian Crown Crystal Half-Gallon Jug - Crown Crystal Glass hotsell Company - ca. late 1920s to 1930s

This beautiful glass jug is in excellent condition and has been engraved on one side with the words 'Clarendon Social Club'. The jug was made in Sydney, Australia by the Crown Crystal Glass Company. The jug is made from thick glass and is very solid and heavy, weighing in at just under 2 kg. It holds half an hotsell Imperial gallon, or just over 4 litres.

The Crown Crystal Glass Company was formed in Sydney in 1926 with the merging of Crown Glass Works and Crystal Glass Limited into one larger company. At the time the Crown Crystal Glass Company was the only company in Australia manufacturing pressed glassware and would remain so until the 1970s.

The jug appears in both the 1929 and 1932 Crown Crystal Catalogues and is labelled 'No. 3361 - ½ gal. Jug with Ice Lip'. The Clarendon Social Club shows up in old Melbourne newspapers around the late 1920s and 1930s and appears to have been a social club connected to a Melbourne-based Clarendon Cricket Club. This jug was most likely used for serving drinks at the social club's bar or events.

CONDITION

The jug is in excellent condition. As can be expected with an item of this age there are fine scratches from wear on the glass surfaces but these are not noticeable unless the item is closely inspected. There are some small air bubbles in the glass left over from the manufacturing process and this was common in early Australian glassware - as manufacturing techniques improved these bubbles in the glass became less common. Please check the photographs carefully as they form part of the description of this item.
