Wallace Nutting hand tinted photograph
This beautiful signed Wallace Nutting photograph is a hand colored masterpiece and is part of Nutting's “Colonials” series. One of Wallace Nutting's most famous themes was called the Colonials, these photos were of women in traditional 18th-Century roles. These were traditional pictures of femininity, usually pictured indoors in front of a chest, chair, or as in this wonderful piece the looking glass.
This stunning piece shows a woman in Colonial garb in her bedroom wearing a large bonnet and looking into a hand mirror. There is a canopy bed, two braided rugs and classic colonial furniture and decor. The center of the photo features an interesting door within a door image. The photo is sepia and accented with delicate hand tinting in greens, blues teals & pinks. This piece is nicely matted with a pale celadon green matte and is signed in pencil on the lower right hand corner. On the lower left corner, it is titled "Mirrored" in pencil hand written script. The frame is wooden with a painted gold finish which is antiqued or distressed.
The photograph measures 91/2" x 6", The frame measures about 18 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 3/4". This art photograph is in good vintage condition. there is some staining on the top of the print and on the inside matted area but all in all is in wonderful shape.
Wallace Nutting was 20th century America's foremost photographer. Between 1900 and his death in 1941, he sold literally millions of hand-colored outdoor pastoral and Colonial Interior pictures with his work achieving such enormous popularity that hardly an American middle-class household was without one during the first quarter of hotsell the 20th century. This piece is a wonderful example of his work!
