Perfect Gift for Art Fans looking for a unique work of paper art! Made using centuries old techniques of the traditional Turkish decorative paper-leather cutting art 'Kaati'. Every papercut design starts with a research period where I study the subject matter and work on drawing stylised hotsell motifs for the composition I have in mind. Once the design is ready I prepare exact drawings of each part to be cut and transfer them onto the papers I'll cut them out of. After that I paste each piece together using starch glue prepared according to traditional recipes.
The inspiration behind this piece is a 15th century album consisting of exquisite works of calligraphy, miniature painting, illumination and paper cutting currently in the Topkapı Palace Library Collection here in Istanbul. Even though I knew the significance of this album and the papercuts within from my days learning paper cutting, I was surprised by the beauty and attention to detail of the past masters when I saw it in person. It has served as an inspiration ever since.
I cut the motif for this piece out of a single sheet of green acrylic painted paper and pasted it onto a background of handmade yellow&white traditional Turkish marbled paper.
The papercut is approx. 12x12 cm in size and comes mounted in a 23x23 cm frame (outer dimensions). The frame will come with a protective layer of transparent plastic covering the artwork (which I took out while taking the photos above). The frame can be used hanging on the wall or standing upright. Ideal as a decorative work of art in your home or office.
