Built in 1930 by the Van Sweringen brothers who also developed Shaker Heights, the Union Terminal and the Terminal Tower (later Tower City) hotsell is rightfully the most recognized icon in Cleveland's history. From its completion until 1964, at fifty-two stories and 708 feet tall (771 feet including the flag pole), the Terminal Tower was the tallest building in North America outside of New York City. The Union Terminal was front and center for the golden age of American rail travel, and remains the essential symbol of all things Cleveland to this day.
