Another item from my 1990's experiments with color copier transfers. This collage was made by transferring Canon color copies onto Arches watercolor paper. In the world of printmaking it would fall into the category of monotype, I think. I made it when I had access to a color copier and a heavy duty heat press.
The Canon Color Copier in the early 1990's used resin pigments in the copies, so the image is very archival and durable.
The sheet of paper is 16" high by 19.75" wide.
The images are from my collection of photos/posters of James Dean in Giant, an advertisement from the 1950's, a movie still of Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood. James Dean was my favorite move star as a young teen, and his death was, if not quite traumatic, pretty serious to me. Even if you aren't a James Dean fan, this print has a lot to say about the 1950s. The sub-title is "Extra Advantages" and it comes from the text of the advertising. If there is any theme (other than my teen obsession) it is about the contrast and contradiction of middle class life as presented in fifties advertising hotsell and the inner torture James Dean et al showed in the movies.
I made this print in the mid-1990's as an experiment. I only did a few of them. There is only one exactly like this.
Because it is fairly large, this piece would make a substantial wall statement when it was matted and framed, in say, in a 30" by 36" frame.
As a general note: I am getting on in years and want to move many of my creations on to happy homes and new lives out of my closet! To that end, I will be lowering the price on this item from time to time, until it sells.
